Nicholas Dingle Awarded Tom Joyner Foundation Scholarship

This week’s Herc Scholar has post-graduation plans of getting a job as a sports anchor and reporter where he is able to cover the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, the World Series, and many more sporting events. Nicholas works to build his portfolio with hopes of landing a job at ESPN as a play-by-play announcer or Sports Center anchor.

Outside of the broadcast world, he has plans to create programs for middle and high school students that will teach them financial literacy and how to choose the right college and how to pay for higher education.

Nicolas is involved on campus as the vice president of Virginia Union University College of African American Men (VCAAM), a Rodham Institute Health Education fellow, parlimentarian of Virginia Union University Association of Black Journalists (VUUABJ), a member of VUU’s PRSSA chapter, and intern for Virginia Union University’s Sports Information Director where he is an announcer and sports reporter.

“My mother Monica Jenkins is influential (to his life) because she is hard working, dedicated, and caring. Dave Johnson is influential (in his life) because he was open and willing to be my mentor and help me in my career,” Nicolas writes, “He has given me advice on being a great play by play announcer and sports reporter.”

“He is considered the DC Sports Man because he has covered DC sports for years,” Nicholas writes about Johnson, “He has allowed me to shadow him three times and I have learned so much.” The VUU scholar goes on to share how Maurice Smith has also been a significant mentor and source of support in his life.
