Virginia Union University's Demarius Pitts has been named the CIAA Rookie of the Year, the CIAA announced on Monday, February 25, in Charlotte, N.C.
Pitts became the first VUU men's basketball player to win the CIAA Rookie of the Year award since Ray Anderson in 2014.
"I just want to continue to get better and win the CIAA," Pitts said after winning the award. "I had heard a lot of talk about me winning it, but I didn't pay that much attention to it."
Pitts, a 6-4 freshman guard from Clinton, Md., averaged 13.1 points for the Panthers this season. He scored his season high of 22 points against the University of Tampa in November, 2018.
VUU's Raemaad Wright was also named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team.
Wright, a 6-7 freshman forward from Suffolk, Va., averaged 4.9 points and 4.8 rebounds for Virginia Union this season.
Virginia Union opens play in the CIAA Tournament at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
