Smith Wins Triple Jump at Battleground Relays

The Virginia Union University track and field program had a strong showing this past weekend at the University of Mary Washington’s Battleground Relays. The meet included Division II institutions such as University of DC, and Lehman, as well as Division III schools of Mary Washington, McDaniel, Shenandoah, Regent, Goucher, Mary Baldwin

Highlighting the meet for the women’s program was a win in the triple jump by sophomore Hananiah Smith. Her mark of 10.40m bested the field. Also, showing a strong performance was freshman Sheila Day who finished 2nd in the 100 hurdles with a season best of 15.09.

Freshmen Ciera Jones and Majia Singleton additionally made the hurdle finals, with times of 17.31 and 17.99 respectively. Making the 100 meter dash finals was Derricka Dubose, who finished 8th in a time of 13.28. Sister Demetria also finished in the top 10 with a time of 13.44 to place 10th.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Singleton, Dubose, Dubose, and Jones finished 3rd in the time of
51.30. Freshman Nyrah Smith-Mayfield finished 3rd the high jump, with a mark of 1.42m. Additionally making the shot put finals was Malika Fowler, who notched a throw of 9.20m.

The Panthers return to action this coming Friday at the University of Mount Olive.
