Virginia Union University Announces Dr. Mignon Jacobs as Associate Provost

Dr. Jacobs will also hold an appointment as a Professor of Old Testament at Samuel DeWitt Proctor

RICHMOND, VA – Virginia Union University today announces the hiring of Dr. Mignon Jacobs as Associate Provost for the university. She will also hold an appointment as Professor of Old Testament at Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University. She assumed both roles on June 1, 2021.

“I’m excited to welcome Dr. Mignon Jacobs to the University’s academic leadership team,” said Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Virginia Union University. “I believe that she brings experience and skills to add to our team, to help guide our program assessment efforts, and to help chart a path to ‘Best in Class.’ She stood out as a candidate of interest in a national search, and I look forward to working with her as part of Panther Nation.”

Prior to joining Virginia Union, Dr. Jacobs served as Dean and Chief Academic Officer and Professor of Old Testament Studies at Ashland Theological Seminary, a graduate division of Ashland University. She is currently a researcher at the Union Institute and University working on her book, Hope and Resilience: Re-Imaging Hope in Times of Crisis. She is also the author of Haggai and Malachi and has been featured in various publications, including Gender, Power and Persuasion and several other chapters and articles.

Dr. Jacobs has held several leadership roles in her discipline, community, and professional organizations, including being a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) Commission on Accrediting; past-President of the Pacific Coast Region for Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the Western Commission for the Study of Religion, and an Old Testament editor of the Common English Bible Study Bible, among other positions.

Dr. Jacobs holds a dual Bachelor of Arts from Bethel University, a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Religion from Claremont Graduate University. Additionally, she is a lay member of the United Methodist Church.
