(Richmond, VA) - Virginia Union University will offer a Bachelor of Science program in Health Science beginning in January 2021. The degree program will be offered through the Department of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5 of the top 10 fastest-growing job markets are in health science fields.
“This program is an important step towards addressing health disparities in the medical profession and in educating health professionals who focus on our underserved communities,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President & CEO. “The Health Science program will allow VUU to help train future physicians and health professionals who identify with the ailments that affect communities of color.”
“Careers in health sciences are among the fastest-growing in the U.S. and this trend shows no sign of abating with the rising need for such specialists due to greater wellness awareness, undeniable public health disparities, and the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, Provost & Senior Vice President. “I’m excited that VUU students can now be prepared for promising, limitless futures through this new degree that equips them to use principles of science for addressing the most pressing health needs of individuals and communities.”
The Health Science major builds upon our existing B.S. in Biology but features exciting new courses like “Health Issues in the African American Community” and a senior internship/capstone experience. It will boost the recruitment of students with health-related career interests especially those who aspire to be physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, lab technicians, medical technologists, sports medicine, and other health-related fields of study.
