Virginia Union University Holds 8th Annual Legacy Awards and Scholarship Gala

Richmond Mayor, Levar Stoney, will host the event. 

[RICHMOND, VA – March 24, 2023] -- Virginia Union University will hold its annual Legacy Awards and Scholarship Gala on Friday, March 31, 2023. The event, hosted by Mayor Levar Stoney, will be held in person at the Greater Richmond Convention Center at 7 PM. The VIP reception will begin at 6 PM. 

“As part of our commitment to develop scholars, leaders and lifelong learners of a global society, VUU is honored and always excited to host our annual scholarship gala,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of the university. “It is imperative that those of us who are blessed give back to others, and this event is just one of many ways we can tangibly, financially contribute to the lives of our students and ensure that financial barriers do not prevent students from receiving a quality education.” 

This is the 8th year that VUU has hosted the gala. The fundraising event is student-driven, allowing students to display their talents and share their plans upon graduating from the university.  

“This year’s theme, ‘In All Things, Excellence’ aligns with the spirit and vision of VUU,” said Joseph Brooks, Assistant Vice President of Institutional Advancement at the university. “This event is significant because it gives students the opportunity to engage and build relationships with the Greater Richmond community.” 

Additionally, the event will highlight five honorees for their contributions to Virginia Union and their impact on the communities they serve: 

  • HBCU Impact Award | Altria Group 
  • Corporate Leader AwardVictor Branch, the first African American President of the Bank of America Richmond Region 
  • Lifetime Achievement Award | Dr. Lucille M. Brown, VUU Board of Trustees, Retired, first female Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools  
  • Beacon of Light Award | VUU National Alumni Association (VUUNAA) 
  • Community Leader Award | Michel Zajur, Founder and CEO of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber 

"The Legacy Awards & Scholarship Gala is a major fundraising social event to spread public awareness of the University and raise scholarship revenue for students,” said Robin Byrd, Special Events & Partnerships Director for Institutional Advancement. “Through our efforts, students are empowered and equipped to be successful throughout their lives, ensuring better futures for us all.” 

Pepsi, Altria Group, McGuireWoods and Henrico County are among this year’s host of corporate, business and community sponsors.  

The formal event begins with the VIP reception at 6 PM, featuring music by the VUU First Thursday Jazz Band. The program and seated dinner begin at 7 PM, with live entertainment provided by the Klaxton Brown Band. Formal attire is required.
