“Despite efforts by the federal and state governments to address a historical legacy of inequitable funding and investments, resource disparities continue to plague historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). HBCUs are significant gateways to higher education and play an essential role in boosting educational attainment, especially among African-American students,” said An’Jou C. White, President of the Virginia Union University National Alumni Association, Inc. “Furthermore, these institutions serve many first-generation students and those who need financial aid to attend college—a growing percentage of the college-going population in the United States.”
