RICHMOND, VA—September 4, 2020— Virginia Union University (VUU) today announced it will hold its first-ever virtual Fall Convocation on Thursday, September 24, at 11:00 a.m. with a broadcast from the VUU Facebook (@Virginia.Union) and YouTube (VUU TV) pages. The ceremony honors the rich tradition of celebrating academic excellence at Virginia Union University, where scholars strive to prepare and inspire students from all walks of life to embrace the power of their limitless future.

“Convocation is an important academic celebration where we recognize our graduating students while officially opening the academic year. This virtual ceremony shows our emerging university and the power of VUU Global, which allows us to reach our community anywhere in the world,” Said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President & CEO of Virginia Union University.

The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., the 30th President and CEO of Edward Waters College (EWC).  Just 37 years old at the time of his appointment, Faison’s selection as EWC’s leader made him the youngest serving President & CEO of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in America.  Before his appointment, Faison served as Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs at Virginia Union University (VUU) in Richmond, VA, where he led the university in achieving historic increases in overall student enrollment and retention.

”Dr. Faison will always be a part of our Panther family and we celebrate the achievements he is leading at Edward Waters College, “ said Dr. Lucas. “Our seniors will remember him as he first welcomed them to VUU. We look forward to his inspirational message as those students enter the last mile of their undergraduate experience.”

Faison will discuss the growing activism igniting across the country and share his views on opportunities emerging for students of color.  He will charge Virginia Union to continue to produce leaders with an entrepreneurial passion and the tenacity to create limitless possibilities in their communities and across the nation.
