Richmond, Va. (March 7, 2023) – Virginia Union University is participating in the 2023 The Home Depot: Retool Your School Campus Improvement Grant program. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, community, and friends are strongly encouraged to vote for VUUs chance to win $150,000 toward campus improvements.
Home Depot doubled the available grant pool this year from $75,000 in 2022 to $150,000 in 2023. The first-place winner in each cluster will receive $150,000.
"This competition is about propelling universities forward fast," said Dr. Robin Davis, Associate Vice President for Business Transformation at VUU. "I know that Virginia Union's alumni, students, faculty, and staff will step up to support VUU."
Virginia Union University’s major projects will focus on the improvement and upgrade of handicap accessibility of campus buildings and grounds. The primary initiative of this project will transform and benefit the campus by addressing the accessible routes and enhancements of interior doorways, restrooms, elevators, and residence halls to allow consistent operation for vertical mobility and adhere to ADA code compliance.
"We want our campus to be inclusive and appealing to all individuals who want to visit the illustrious and historic campus of Virginia Union University," Davis added.
The grant competition is in its 14th year and will award $2M between 30 HBCUs. Every HBCU has the chance to win a grant between $40,000 to $150,000.
Home Depot strives to give back to our nation’s HBCUs what they have generously given to their communities: a strong foundation, renewed purpose, and distinctive character. Since 2009, the Retool, Your School Program, has provided over $5.2 million in campus improvement grants that allow HBCUs to make sustainable improvements to their campuses.
