RICHMOND, VA --- September 19, 2023] — Virginia Union University President and CEO Dr. Hakim J. Lucas is excited to welcome back Dr. Terrell Strayhorn as Associate Provost.
"As Associate Provost, Dr. Strayhorn will play a crucial role in shaping our academic programs, fostering innovation in teaching and learning, and promoting the success and well-being of our students and faculty. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to VUU, and I am confident that he will make a significant impact in this important leadership role," said Dr. Lucas.
Dr. Terrell Strayhorn was the former provost in 2020 and is returning to VUU as Associate Provost. He is one of the nation's leading experts on diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success. A distinguished researcher and social scientist, Strayhorn is internationally known for his ground-breaking work on "sense of belonging" in learning and workspaces. To date, he has published 13 books, including College Students' Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for All Students and the newly-released Creating New Possibilities for the Future of HBCUs, to name a few.
Strayhorn has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in top-ranked journals and nationally circulated policy reports, technical briefs, and op-eds. A respected thought leader, Strayhorn's research and scholarship have been cited or quoted in dozens of leading sources, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Higher Ed Dive, Chronically of Higher Education, and more. He's a contributing writer for Entrepreneur, AllBusiness, and Thrive Global and leads the "Belonging Matters" blog for Psychology Today. Grants totaling over $10 million have supported his research over the years, and he's known for his unapologetic commitment to translating research to practice in ways that encourage innovation, create efficiencies, accelerate change, and ensure success. Previously, Strayhorn has served on the faculty at major research (R1) universities and as chief academic officer at two private HBCUs.
At Virginia Union, Strayhorn will serve as Associate Provost while maintaining his position as a tenured Professor of Education and Psychology in the Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education and School of Arts & Sciences, respectively.
Strayhorn is actively involved on several non-profit boards, including Rainbow Labs and Psychologists of Color, Inc. He earned a bachelor of arts in music and religious studies from the University of Virginia, a master's in education from UVA, a master's in psychology from Indiana Tech, and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. He is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
