RICHMOND, VA --- September 11, 2023] — Virginia Union University President and CEO Dr. Hakim J. Lucas is excited to welcome Dr. Joan B. Johnson as VUU's Dean of Education.

An advocate in teacher education with more than two decades of expertise in academic administration and a proven educational leader, Dr. Joan B. Johnson has dedicated her career to high-quality teacher education, program leadership, and organizational success.
Dr. Johnson has acquired a broad range of experiences in higher education, serving as an Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Educational Counseling and School Leadership at Norfolk State University, Regent University Department Chair, and Executive Director of Licensure and Accreditation at Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, Dr. Johnson has been appointed to a second term as a member of the Executive Council Committee for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation Programs (CAEP).
Dr. Johnson most recently served as the Assistant Superintendent of Teacher Education and Licensure for the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), where her efforts with the VDOE supported the Commonwealth's school communities' access to highly qualified educators, including her leadership of the state's first Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program through cooperative efforts with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. Joan is a collaborative leader with an established reputation as a data-driven decision-maker committed to community engagement and educator excellence.
A proud Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. member, Dr. Joan B. Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from James Madison University and a master's degree in educational counseling from the University of Virginia. Joan earned a Ph.D. in urban education in higher education administration from Old Dominion University.
