Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach scored 16 points, but Elizabeth City State University defeated the Panthers 60-57 on Wednesday, January 30, in Elizabeth City, N.C.
"I thought defensively we started the game off flat and allowed Elizabeth City to get open looks in the first half," said VUU Head Coach Jay Butler. "We played much better defensively in the second half, but missed free throws and turnovers hurt us down the stretch."
VUU's Will Jenkins added 14 points and led the Panthers on the boards with eight rebounds.
"Anytime you can hold a team to 60 points for the game, that should give you a shot at winning," said Butler. "Offensively we struggled to make plays when we needed to."
The loss dropped VUU to 11-9 overall and 7-3 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State is now 11-11 overall and 7-4 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union will now return home to face Chowan University at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
