Virginia Union University's women's volleyball team defeated Claflin University and Saint Augustine's University and nearly upset perennial CIAA power Shaw University at the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up on September 22-23 at Big Ben's Home Court in Richmond, Va.
In VUU's first match on September 22, Virginia Union's Ambryanna Moore had 13 kills as the Lady Panthers downed Claflin 25-14, 25-17, 25-10.
Virginia Union's Jamaica Adams collected 14 defensive digs and teammate A'rmaria Wright had 31 assists.
In the second match on September 22, VUU took Shaw to five games before the Bears defeated the Lady Panthers 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13.
VUU's Zaquae Downton led the Lady Panthers with 11 kills and five service aces while Adams also had 14 digs.
In the Lady Panthers' third match, on September 23, VUU defeated Saint Augustine's 25-18, 25-16, 27-25.
Virginia Union's Jada Starling led the team with eight kills while Wright had four aces and 23 assists. Adams also had 22 digs.
The wins raise VUU's record to 4-12 overall and 3-4 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Elizabeth City, N.C., to face Elizabeth City State University at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 27.
