VUU Announces Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute Inaugural Leadership Awards Luncheon

(Richmond, VA) – Virginia Union University’s (VUU) Sydney Lewis School of Business (SLSB) will hold its Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute Inaugural Leadership Awards Luncheon on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. It will be held in the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center, 1500 N. Lombardy Street, Richmond, VA 23220. Registration and tickets are available at www.vuu.edu.

Three exceptional leaders will be honored during the luncheon. They each have demonstrated professional excellence in keeping with the values of retired VUU Professor Ruth Coles Harris, SLSB, and VUU. They are:​

Freda Thornton: President and CEO of FWL & Sons Inc., a family operation that owns and operates five Richmond-area McDonald’s restaurants. She will serve as the keynote speaker for the luncheon. 

George Martin: Managing partner at McGuireWoods Law firm and a community service advocate.

Wendy Lewis: Audit Partner in KPMG’s commercial audit practice. She is a graduate of VUU’s Sydney Lewis School of Business.

Dr. Joy Goodrich: Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs/ Provost at Virginia Union University. Dr. Goodrich will receive an Education Leadership Award.

“It is always a privilege to celebrate people who are making a difference both professionally, and in our community,” said Dr. Delta Bowers, Sydney Lewis School of Business. “The Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute shines a light on these individuals who are wonderful examples for our students.

The Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute offers leadership lecture series to students, workshops for professionals, certificate programs for professionals, and seminars to the community at-large. It is intended to deepen participants understanding of leadership, administration, business, entrepreneurship, and to strengthen leadership skills which embrace service to others.

“The Leadership Institute is a special offering for our students so they can learn from accomplished professionals first hand,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President & CEO of Virginia Union University. “We are honored to have Dr. Harris as a resource to help make the Leadership Institute a valuable learning opportunity for our students.”
