Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach scored a game-high 27 points as VUU defeated Elizabeth City State University 75-58 on Wednesday, February 20, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
The game was the final home game for Eric Bowles, Jordan Thornton, DeAndre Thomas and Jemal Smith.
The win also put VUU in position to capture the #2 seed in the Northern Division with a win over Chowan on Saturday, February 23.
"We still have to win on Saturday, and we saw where Virginia State University beat Bowie State University, so it was a good win for us on Senior Night," VUU Head Coach Jay Butler said.
VUU and Bowie State have identical 6-3 divisional records and identical 12-4 CIAA records. Virginia Union defeated Bowie State 75-72 in Bowie, Md., on January 23, and Bowie State defeated the Panthers 64-62 in Richmond on February 13, giving VUU a +1 lead in the point differential tiebreaker.
VUU has one game left against Chowan while Bowie State faces Elizabeth City State, both games are on Saturday.
Virginia Union's Demarius Pitts scored 14 points while Will Jenkins added 10 points in the win. Pitts and Thornton both had eight rebounds to lead VUU on the boards.
The win raised VUU's record to 17-10 overall and 12-4 in the CIAA. Elizabeth City State fell to 12-15 overall and 8-8 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union wraps up the 2018-19 regular season when it meets Chowan University at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, in Murfreesboro, N.C.
