Virginia Union University’s golf team has added another honor to their historic season.
The Panthers have won the CIAA Dr. Freddie Vaughn Highest Academic Award for the 2018-19 season with a team grade point average of 3.60.
VUU’s Alkin Barkley, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, majoring in Business Accounting, and Travon Willis, a freshman from Indian Trails, N.C., majoring in Engineering, both recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs for the season while Sergio Escalante recorded a 3.94 GPA.
VUU’s Allan Day, a senior from Midlothian, Va., majoring in Finance, recorded a GPA of 3.71 while teammate Sherwood Baskerville, a freshman from South Hill, Va., majoring in Criminal Justice, had a GPA of 3.63.
Paul Meintz, a senior from La Feria, Tex., majoring in Finance & Banking, recorded a grade point average of 3.16 and Christopher Peoples, a junior from Portsmouth, Va., majoring in Biology, had a GPA of 2.89.
“Our golfers have excelled on the golf course and in the classroom,” said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.
Earlier this season, the Panthers captured their first CIAA Championship in 48 years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
