VUU to Host CIAA Golf Championship

Charlotte, NC (March 20, 2018) - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announced today a two-year agreement to partner with The Club at Viniterra in New Kent, Virginia as the site of the CIAA Golf Championships.

The 2018 CIAA Golf championship will take place on April 19-20 and be hosted by Virginia Union University and Richmond Region Tourism.

The Club at Viniterra is an 18-hole championship course designed by Rees Jones, located 20 miles east of downtown Richmond in New Kent. The golf course is adjacent to the award-winning New Kent Winery and is the centerpiece of the unique and upscale Viniterra residential community.

"We're happy to have the opportunity to host the CIAA Golf Championship again," said Joe Taylor, Athletic Director at VUU.  "This is a great event, not just for the University but for the city of Richmond as well."

"It's exciting not just for the University, but also the golf team to again serve as hosts for the 2018 CIAA Golf Championship," said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  "We had an exciting finish when we hosted last year and we hope to have an even more exciting finish this year."

"We're excited to have the CIAA here this year," said Jeff Moy, General Manager of Viniterra.  "We have a challenging track which will test all of the competitors' skill level and it should be a great event this year and in 2019."

The golf course is consistently rated as a Top 10 Course You Can Play in Virginia.  The layout incorporates a variety of diverse, natural features, including frequent and dramatic elevation changes. The course, capable of measuring anywhere from 5,200 – 7,725 yards is designed with infinite flexibility. Multiple tee angles, combined with the thoughtful and strategic location of a variety of grass, sand and water hazards, assure an enjoyable experience for all skill levels.

"We are thrilled to welcome these collegiate golfers and their families to the Richmond Region," said Richmond Region Tourism Sports Development Director Danielle Vincenti. "With beautiful New Kent County as its backdrop, the Club at Viniterra provides the perfect setting for playing and watching golf. Athletes, their families, and golf fans are in for a treat."

The championship was previously held at The Crossings Golf Club in Glen Allen, VA.  Defending champions Chowan University captured back to back titles in 2016 and 2017.
