RICHMOND - June 6, 2023] — Virginia Union University is announcing new leaders on its academic and administrative teams.

Margaret Dismond Martin is the new Chief of Staff for President Hakim J. Lucas. Ms. Martin is a highly accomplished leader and administrative professional with diverse expertise and a proven track record of success in higher education. Martin’s experience extends to various areas of the education sector. Her ability to adapt quickly to different roles and apply her skills effectively has contributed to her reputation as a versatile professional. Formerly, she has held positions at Hampton University as Executive Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives; Assistant Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Education; Assistant Professor of English, Department of English and Foreign Languages; Director, Liberal Studies Program; and Director, Hampton University College of Virginia Beach among myriad others.
During her career, Martin served Hampton University as Chair of the SACSCOC Quality Enhancement Plan Committee, the annual Read-In Committee, and the University Catalog Committee. Also, she served as coordinator of the Marching Toward Justice Traveling Art Exhibit and producer of the documentary film Hampton University: One of the Wonders of the World.
Martin’s educational background is extensive, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in English literature at Spelman College in 1987, a Master’s degree in English literature from Old Dominion University in 1989, and a Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership at The George Washington University in 2005.
As a seasoned professional, Martin continues to contribute to the success of organizations, leveraging her expertise, leadership, and passion for excellence. With a forward-thinking mindset and a dedication to continuous improvement, she remains at the forefront of higher education.
