Statement of Educational Effectiveness
As a center of excellence for graduate theological education, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University strives to be faithful to our mission and purpose and our entire community assesses regularly the quality and character of our educational ministry. All programs have established learning outcomes that are reviewed through varied assessment instruments which measure and shape the delivery and quality of the learning experience at STVU.
STVU is dedicated to retaining students and has a current retention rate of 89%. The percentage of students completing their degree program on time is near or exceeds the average rates for Association of Theological Schools accredited schools. Normal time to completion for our degree programs are M.Div, 3 years; MACE 2 years, and D.Min. 3 years. For 2017-2018 the completion rates are as follows:
M.Div: 90%
MACE: 78%
D.Min.: 71%
Completion percentages are higher when including students who complete their program outside of the normal time frame and who transfer and complete other graduate programs at STVU.
Students express a high level of satisfaction with instruction, services, spiritual formation, and the community life. Three areas of significant development among students are noted: interpretation and application of scripture, critical/public theological thinking, and conduct of worship/liturgical practice.
The overall placement rate for STVU graduates is 68%. This rate reflects our graduates who received a vocational placement, non-vocational placement, or went on for further graduate study within one year of graduation. The STVU rate is competitive with ATS accredited mainline graduate theological schools and is near the 78% rate for all ATS schools.
Engaging in the graduate theological enterprise at STVU is exciting and challenging. We welcome your presence and participation in our community of reverent scholars.
