Student Code of Conduct Addendum

Emergency Management Protocol
Effective March 20, 2020

During emergency management crisis (i.e., international health pandemic, inclement weather, etc.), it is incumbent that Virginia Union University (VUU) establish protocols to ensure the overall safety and well-being of the campus community.

Thusly, all Student Code of Conduct violations, will be addressed administratively, thereby suspending all other judicial processes (no mediation, conduct hearings, etc.). All incidents reported to the Dean of Students will be reviewed and a decision for responsibility will be made to protect the health and safety of our campus community.

During the emergency response, VUU may permit students to maintain on-campus residential housing status for extenuating circumstances (restrictions may apply). For all students who are approved to remain on campus during these indicated times, the following student code of conduct directives will be strongly enforced:

  • On-campus housing is restricted to those who have been approved.
  • An on-campus curfew will be enforced (I.e., no entry or exit between the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.).
  • Any student not approved will not be permitted to access campus.
    • Should any student want to access campus, they must obtain the written approval of the Dean of Students and/or Director of Housing.
  • Visitation is strictly prohibited.
    • Non-residential VUU students are prohibited from visiting students on campus.
  • Guests and visitors are not permitted on campus.
  • The use of tobacco products, drugs, and alcohol anywhere on campus is strictly prohibited.
  • No fighting and/or physical abuse.
  • No disorderly conduct.
    • This includes but is not limited to profane or rude language directed at peers, faculty, or staff.
  • The unlawful use of emergency exits and equipment is strictly prohibited.
  • Weapons (to include ammunition) of any kind are banned (not permitted) on campus.
  • Students are required to maintain clean and sanitary living conditions at all times.
    • This includes the proper disposal of waste.
  • Students will only be permitted to access their assigned residence hall and the library.
    • Students will only be permitted to use the library resources for learning purposes.
    • Building-to-building visitation is not permitted.
  • Dining services will be distributed by take-out when the dining hall is closed.
  • Social gathering is limited based on location:
    • Social gathering indoors is restricted to no more than three (3) or more students.
    • Social gathering outdoors is restricted to no more than ten (10) or more students.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to maintain distance (in accordance with recommended health guidelines) between each other to reduce the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to perform frequent hand hygiene and cough etiquette.
  • Health Services (CAHN) will be provided virtually via tele and acute/sick visits by appointment only. To schedule an appointment contact, (804)780-0840.
    • Virtual appointments require the student to download the patient portal app.
    • Face-to-face acute/sick visits with a scheduled appointment will be seen from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday at Northside Medical Center (2809 North Avenue, Richmond, VA 23222) and Vernon J. Harris Medical & Dental Center (719 N. 25th Street, Richmond, VA 23223).
    • In the event that an acute/sick visit requires an in-person appointment, transportation is being provided on a case-by-case basis. However, the need would be assessed first by CAHN’s medical team to ensure the safety of transportation staff.

Failure to adhere to the aforementioned directives, as well as the published guidelines of the VUU Housing & Residence Life handbook and the VUU Student Code of Conduct will result in suspension from campus housing through fall 2020. Students found to be in violation will have 24 hours to vacate the residence hall and campus. Prior to leaving campus, students will be required to complete the residential check-out process, return all keys and VUU identification to a university official (Housing representative or Campus Police). Attempts to return to campus without the written consent of the Director of Housing, Dean of Students and/or VP of Student Development will be considered criminal trespassing.
